Every year, the Toshiba Classic attracts a field of professionals that is a virtual Golf Hall of Fame. The leader-board is filled with names like Bernard Langer, Jay Haas, Hale Irwin, Fuzzy Zoeller, Tom Kite, Peter Jacobsen and more. Massive galleries file into Newport Beach Country Club to lend a level of excitement that has established the Toshiba Classic as the finest stop on the PGA Champions Tour. And those fans have historically been treated to some of the most riveting golf action in Tour history, including five playoffs in our twelve years.
The Toshiba Classic is also about community. The tournament is “owned and operated” by Hoag Hospital Foundation, and as such, the majority of the proceeds from the Toshiba Classic benefit Hoag Hospital’s Centers of Excellence. In addition to Hoag, tournament proceeds have been contributed to over 45 other charities. The tournament generates over $1,000,000 for charity annually, and our 13 year total exceeds $13 million.
The reason our charitable financial success is simply the generous support of Southern California businesses. With over 150 sponsors, 1000 volunteers and 85,000 spectators participating each year, this tournament has become a tradition in the Orange County business community. The tournament also provides additional benefit to the community beyond the charitable impact. The Toshiba Classic is televised domestically on The Golf Channel, and internationally on PGA Tour television partners overseas. In addition, the tournament fills hotel rooms, restaurants and businesses during the competition, providing an enormous influx of dollars into our economy.
