Toshiba Classic announces 2018 schedule
Toshiba Classic returns to its traditional March dates and unveils exciting new features for fans surrounding the signature 17th hole
Hoag Charity Sports announced today that the 23rd Annual Toshiba Classic will take place March 5-11, 2018 at the Newport Beach Country Club – one year from today’s announcement. It was previously announced that the tournament would not be played in the fall of 2017, but would instead move back to its traditional dates in the late winter/spring of 2018. The move back is prompted by many reasons, including changes in the PGA Tour Champions schedule and the difficulty of finding ideal dates in the fall.
“We are anxious to move back “home” to dates we had for almost two decades. Playing in springtime alongside the PGA Tour’s West Coast Swing and in advance of the golf season – with anticipation for the majors – will create a familiar feel but with new excitement. And coupled new programs we will be unveiling we are certain that the Toshiba Classic will see some of our best tournaments in history in the coming years.” said Jeff Purser, Executive Director of the tournament.
“I’m excited to come back to Newport Beach. This is clearly my favorite spot on the Champions Tour and I’ve had some of my fondest memories at the Toshiba Classic.” said Jay Haas, 2016 and 2007 Toshiba Classic champion.
The Toshiba Classic will unveil a whole new look with added drama and energy on the signature par three 17th hole. By offering new “cabanas” surrounding the 17th tee down to the water, the tournament is attempting to surround the hole to create a full stadium effect. The cabanas will place guests quite literally on top of the action to see golf legends such as Fred Couples, John Daly and last year’s defending champion, Jay Haas tee off from this NBCC signature hole. Additionally, an enormous public bleacher and restaurant/bar area will be added to give golf fans a festive atmosphere unlike anything that the tournament has had before.
The 3rd Annual Military Appreciation Day, presented by Microsemi, on Saturday, March 10, 2018, will again honor the brave men and women who serve and have served our nation. The opening and closing ceremonies have become a tradition of Military Day, as we thank the servicemen and women in attendance. Complimentary admission and food & beverage vouchers are given to each military member and up to three of their guests. And most importantly, the tournament provides funding to military causes, including the 1/1 Marines Foundation and Open Hearts for Purple Hearts Foundation. Each year a military family is also chosen for direct financial support.
On Sunday, March 11, 2018, the 2nd Annual Toshiba Classic Student Day gives free admission to all kids up to age 18. Activities include a Kids Zone with golf and other activities. All students in attendance will be invited to participate in a putting contest for chances to win scholarships, golf equipment, tickets to local attractions and more.
The Toshiba Classic’s lead charity and operator is Hoag Charity Sports, a supporting organization of Hoag Hospital Foundation, and the majority of net proceeds from the tournament will benefit Hoag programs, including the Mary and Dick Allen Diabetes Center. The 2018 Toshiba Classic marks Hoag’s 20th anniversary as the host, manager and beneficiary of the tournament.
